Solo Application with IllumiNITE Wrap™
To begin the application, we secured the graphic to the fender using magnets and then cut the liner using a backslider knife. Next, we remove the center portion of the liner exposing a strip of adhesive. This allows us to anchor the application to the center of the hood dividing the application into two manageable pieces. This area of the hood has been installed and yet it can be repositioned with ease.
Competitive reflective films are not repositionable and create unrecoverable chatter lines or bruising when you try to snap them up. There is no bruising at all on this repositioned graphic.
Now, we come to the ridgeline of the channel on the hood. As we tuck the graphic into the channel small wrinkles developed that could turn into creases. IllumiNITE Wrap™ is easy to pop up so we can work the wrinkles out. We can remove the rest of the liner with confidence even though the graphic drapes over the whole second side of the hood.
Usually when installing a reflective film, areas like this with wrinkles would have to be worked from the center out and often require the use of heat. IllumiNITE Wrap™ is a soft enough film that you can simply add a little tension and the wrinkles flatten out. We just tightened up this area here but we still have wrinkles toward the front of the hood. Again, unlike other reflective films, IllumiNITE Wrap™ lets us lift the graphic and place it exactly where we need it. Now this area is wrinkle free and ready to be installed.
Installing Reflective Striping
Laying reflective striping with competitive products is usually difficult and time-consuming. We begin the application by setting the stripe in place and holding it there with magnets.
Next we make one cut in the liner with a backslider knife and remove the liner halfway back, and then line the graphic up with our registration marks. IllumiNITE Wrap™ allows you to pre-tack the graphics along the length of the stripe confirming that your registration is perfect.
Areas like this fender often require us to reposition the stripe once or twice to make sure it’s perfectly straight. To demonstrate how repositionable IllumiNITE Wrap™ is, in this video, we installed a stripe onto the fender area and snap it up more than once. Other reflective films would show bruising or fail altogether, but as you can see there are no bruises or chatter lines throughout the smooth transition from red to white.
Now that the stripe is properly placed on the fender we can finish the application. Notice how IllumiNITE Wrap™ doesn’t pre-tack, allowing the lines of tension created by the swell in the fender to be easily worked back to the edge of the door.
In the right hand frame below, you can see a competitive brand of reflective film being snapped up immediately after it was applied. You can clearly see the chatter lines that have permanently damaged this piece of film. It will have to be replaced.
